What is Dimethiconol?

Dimethiconol is a type of silicone - you may have heard of Dimethicone! Referred to as silicone gum, Dimethiconol is a polymer quite similar to dimethicone, but with hydroxyl groups. It is heavier than dimethicone, and gives substantivity to cosmetic products, with a good slip and a cushiony skin feel. Because of its high molecular weight, dimethiconol is often combined within a smaller silicone molecule for a better spreadability, creating dimethiconol blends like Dimethicone/Dimethiconol or Cyclopentasiloxane/Dimethiconol.

Dimethiconol-based blends are widely used in hair care products to improve the appearance & texture of the hair with a conditioning effect. They also help the product to apply evenly on the skin and leave an enveloping and silky skin feel.

Unfortunately, due to their synthetic origin & negative impact on the environment, the use of these ingredients tends to decline. [1]
